DEMONSTRATING SUPPLY

From the January 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

HUMANLY, supply is thought of in various material ways. Spiritually, supply stands for the infinite impartations of God, divine Love. In "Unity of Good" (p. 29) Mrs. Eddy writes, "There is but one God, one Soul, or Mind, and that one is infinite, supplying all that is absolutely immutable and eternal,—Truth, Life, Love." Spiritual man knows only supply, never need, since in spiritual consciousness there is none. Reflecting God, good, man in His likeness expresses manifold abundance.

This question urges itself upon our attention: What value have abstract truths when it comes to the human need for a home, food, clothing? A practical question such as this calls for a spiritually ideal answer, because idealism, as understood in Christian Science, alone is practical. Fundamentally, materialism has never proved itself so. Factually, there are not two kinds of supply, the spiritual and material, but only one, the spiritual. Because Jesus understood this he was able to bring supply into visible evidence for human betterment.

Paul speaks of "the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ." As we give first heed to demonstrating our spiritual supply of true thoughts and heavenly qualities, fear in regard to supply for the provision of daily needs is gradually supplanted by a new and absorbing interest. This interest consists in reaching out for and cherishing the wholly spiritual ideas of life, health, and intelligence; and so we are enabled to resist every darkening, terrifying suggestion of error. As we carry on this mental activity in the spirit of loyalty to God and man, and always with rejoicing, this true thinking on our part will be made manifest in all needful ways day by day. But the motive for our true thinking must always be love of Principle, not fear of lack. The less we look anxiously for the reward of our true thinking, the more readily will this reward become evident, because absolutely true thinking is an unfailingly effectual leaven.
