WHEN Jesus met and overcame the three temptations spoken of in the fourth chapter of Matthew, he established the basis for healing all the ills of mortal belief.
He met the first temptation with the Scriptural declaration, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God." Thus the first step in healing was the recognition that man is sustained by Spirit, not matter. It follows, then, that life is not material, and so is not subject to matter's so-called laws.
It is possible that when this fundamental truth is clearly realized, healing will be accomplished instantly. God's image and likeness cannot be sick. Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 468), says that substance is "that which is eternal and incapable of discord and decay." Therefore, real substance cannot possibly be diseased or out of order.
