THE word "identity" is derived from the Latin idem, meaning "the same," that is, having complete similarity. It means "selfsameness" and the continuity or persistence of individuality. In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy defines it precisely and scientifically when she writes (p. 477), "Identity is the reflection of Spirit, the reflection in multifarious forms of the living Principle, Love."
This definition unveils glorious views of real manhood. It reveals individual man's true nature as identical with that of his Maker. Furthermore, it indicates his relationship to God as the inseparable expression of Deity. Man's identity is his conscious individuality. Man is neither self-existent nor self-sufficient, but as God's reflection he is entirely dependent upon eternal Principle, Love, for being and action.
One's reflection of Spirit constitutes his real identity. Only that which reflects immortal Love has reality or existence. Christ Jesus recognized his true identity when he prayed, "And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was." The Christian Scientist demonstrates his real identity in actively expressing the spiritual qualities of joy, love, peace, intelligence, and power.
