"THE SPIRIT OF HIS SON"

From the August 1939 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN his inspiring letter to the Galatians, in referring to their "adoption of sons," Paul said, "And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father." At that time the Galatian converts to Christianity were being subjected to certain influences designed to turn them from the stirring and inspired teaching of the apostle.

From the troubled dream of a selfhood in matter, the Christian Scientist is awakening to the glorious perception that he is in reality the son of God now and here, and is giving earnest attention to the qualities of the Son. The guiding and guarding star is the heavenly inspiration that holds him at one with infinite Mind. Human ambition and personal aggrandizement have no purpose or place in the divine accomplishment. "The Spirit of his Son" cries, "Abba, Father." Nothing else can or does so acknowledge God. A self-centered ego always testifies to separateness, aloofness from God. Real sonship, true selfhood, testifies to conscious unity, possession, ability, unfolding opportunity. One is conscious of true companionship, for he companions with God's ideas.

"The universe is filled with spiritual ideas, which He evolves, and they are obedient to the Mind that makes them," Mary Baker Eddy says on page 295 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Through the contemplation of ideas, thought becomes boundless, free; loving becomes more spontaneous, impersonal, and joy more sure of attainment, for it does not depend upon persons. This is a part of one's glorious inheritance as an heir of God. Peace is realized because the son is always in obedience to the Father, Mind. He is God-governed. Consciousness of this truth brings marvelous self-possession, security, and trust. More than a passing assurance, this true consciousness will unfold throughout eternity, identifying itself with the glories of infinite being, the limitless radiance of divine Life and Love. To become more conscious of this truth, to cultivate earnestly "the Spirit of his Son," is the work of the Christian Scientist.
