How reassuring is Mrs. Eddy's promise that refuge and protection are to be found in the understanding of Spirit! She tells us that this is where we must find our help, for she has written (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 362), "We all must find shelter from the storm and tempest in the tabernacle of Spirit." We may rise above turmoil, fear, doubt, and pain through a higher understanding of the spiritual, real Church, "the tabernacle of Spirit."
That the earnest, consistent study of Christian Science will bring into the experience of everyone an increasing sense of harmony, as thought continues to rise higher, there is not the slightest doubt. This study should include a frequent consideration of the definition of "Church," and an appreciation of our opportunity as Christian Scientists of helping to bring into fruition, for all mankind, the promises we find in the second paragraph of the definition, which reads (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 583), "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."
When one studies this definition of "Church" and learns how to follow Mrs. Eddy's instruction regarding "Prayer in Church," given in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. VIII, Sect. 5), he finds that he acquires a method of thinking which is invaluable to him in all his affairs.
