I have a great desire to give my testimony to the glory of God and in grateful confirmation that Christian Science, through divine power, heals disease and liberates from sin and human passions.
In the spring of 1938 I suddenly became ill with thrombosis in both legs. After two months' treatment by a specialist, the ailment had become so much worse that we sought advice and help from a nature doctor. According to the latter's diagnosis, I was suffering from acute medicinal poisoning, and ulcer in the right kidney; furthermore, he said that my right lung was black from smoking, and no longer functioned. He said that help might perhaps be had through an immediate and radical purification of the blood, though this was made difficult through the weakened state of the whole organism. Some step had to be taken, and I therefore took personal responsibility for that mode of treatment. A crisis arose which brought me to the verge of death.
My sister and a friend, in their great anxiety, decided to call upon Christian Science, and through the good offices kindly offered by an adherent of this teaching, the case was immediately placed in the hands of a practitioner, and absent treatment was given. This was without my knowledge, for I had been unconscious already for a day and a half, but those who nursed me say further that I must then have felt some great influence, for I said all at once, "Someone is praying for me." For my dear ones that was a beautiful and deep experience, especially since none of them knew either the teachings or the blessings of Christian Science.
