Several years ago, in the office where I was employed, a group of women who were friendly toward Christian Science asked me if I had ever known of the healing in Christian Science of harelip. I was particularly interested in the question, for I had spent months of mental agony prior to the birth of my first baby, fearing that he would inherit the condition of cleft palate, which had appeared in two members of my husband's immediate family, and, according to general belief, having skipped a generation, was due to manifest itself in his offspring.
Work was begun by a Christian Science practitioner as soon as I realized the baby was coming, but I had little understanding and my fear was great. When the child arrived, not only normal but very pretty, my gratitude was boundless, and I wondered then how I could have doubted God's power.
I was not troubled further by this error until about the fifth month of my next pregnancy. Then suddenly one morning the mental suggestion became so strong that I was almost overcome with terror. I left my work and rushed for my copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The book opened to a page showing the falsity of the belief of heredity. It was as if God had spoken to comfort me, and there was no further anxiety. The child was normal.
