CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS AND THE CAUSE OF FREEDOM

From the October 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In an advertisement that appeared in a recent magazine, the writer was struck by these words in bold type: "What did you do today . . . for freedom?" As the question was pondered, it became clear that Christian Scientists should be doing a great deal every day to further the cause of freedom and to guarantee its continuance in the democratic countries and its establishment in those lands now in subjection to tyranny and oppression.

Of course we, as Christian Scientists, know that political tyranny is simply the manifestation of an erroneous state of thought. If it were really understood that there is but one Mind and that one God, or good, then no carnal belief calling itself mortal mind or human will could force its domination upon mankind.

The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, realized this fact, and in her writings she emphasizes the importance of claiming immunity from the tyrannical laws of mortal mind. In the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 225), she states: "Whatever enslaves man is opposed to the divine government. Truth makes man free." Here is a welcome promise for those enslaved by mortal mind; for certainly all erroneous beliefs are phases of the one evil.
