HANDLING THE SPECIFIC ERROR

From the February 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 365, "If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine."

We know that by his realization of divine Love the Master quickly healed the sick, and that our Leader's healing work was of this nature —the instant dismissal of error through the realization of divine Love. This, then, is the ideal for all Christian Scientists, and we know from the testimonies of those who have been healed that in many instances it is attained in the practice of Christian Science today. The consistent attainment of instantaneous healing comes through growth and experience on the part of students of this teaching.

It is always realization of spiritual truth which heals in Christian Science. When such realization is not reached at once, the student may help himself to attain it by mental argument. Mrs. Eddy has given us detailed instruction on how to heal by argument, through which we may wrestle as did Jacob to overcome the evidence of the senses, until it becomes unreal to us and to those whom we would help. Sometimes, the patience and humility involved in working out a problem serve to inspire the higher sense of Love that will make the healing seem "instantaneous" in its effect, even though a period of struggle has preceded the final yielding of false belief to Truth.
