SPIRITUAL HERITAGE VERSUS HEREDITY

From the April 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

As affording a solution to the problem of heredity, the Psalmist's words may well be considered: "The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance . . . yea, I have a goodly heritage." Popular material theories teach that evil as well as good is communicable. Christian Science reveals the fact that since God is good and is the origin of all real being, only good is imparted from God to man. Man, as God's reflection, inherits all the qualities of God. Man therefore is not predisposed to sickness; he is predestined to health. Man has no predilection to sin; he is elected to grace. Man is not doomed to die; he is destined to live.

Armed with an understanding of these scientific truths, one who has heretofore believed himself bound by notions of hereditary sickness and sin may free himself from that illegitimate bondage and exercise his spiritual heritage of freedom. Christian Science teaches him how to do this.

In her "Dedicatory Sermon ' in "Pulpit and Press" Mary Baker Eddy calls attention to Jesus' declaration (p. 3,) "The kingdom of God is within you," and exhorts us, "Know, then, that you possess sovereign power to think and act rightly, and that nothing can dispossess you of this heritage and trespass on Love." Our heritage is the kingdom within, the "sovereign power to think and act rightly." This sovereign power is spiritual, not material, and permanent, not temporary. If nothing can deprive us of this power, nothing can deprive us of our power to be well and happy. Our "sovereign power to think . . . rightly" is derived directly from the Mind which is God, supreme intelligence. Our real heritage is from God, from our divine and real Parent.
