From the July 1943 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I was nine years old my mother first became interested in Christian Science. A friend had told her that in the Christian Science Sunday School children were taught to be unafraid. This greatly impressed my mother, and soon I was enrolled in the local Sunday school. I cannot think of my Sunday school experience without being grateful for the consecrated work of the teachers. The Christ, Truth, which was revealed to me there, soon proved to be an unfailing help in both school and music work, particularly at testing times.

For several years I had been subject to attacks of severe chest colds, of which my mother was very fearful. When an attack occurred, soon after my mother became interested in Christian Science, she took the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and studied it. In a few hours a healing took place which has been both complete and permanent. Since that time Christian Science has been my only remedy in illness, and the means of solving every problem. After a required medical examination in 1940 the physician showed me the record and said, "You should be proud of this sheet." It was not pride, but gratitude to our Father-Mother God, which was filling my thought.

While still in my teens I accepted my first position as a schoolteacher. It was in a pioneer homestead community, five hundred miles from the nearest city, and seven hundred from my home. Here I lived and worked alone. Because of my inexperience, the large enrollment, and the isolation and extreme poverty of the community, the work seemed very difficult. But here, away from relatives, church, or practitioner. I found the Christ, Truth, to be indeed the Way-shower and the Comforter. The statement (Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy, p. 307), "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies," was proved many times. By my holding steadfastly to Truth, a severe attack of influenza was overcome in two days, and no time was lost from my occupation. Periodic feelings of loneliness and homesickness ceased to occur after this healing had been worked out.
