Searching always for the reason for humanity's woes, perplexed by seeing those who strove to lead a godly life so often stricken by pain and loss, failing to get satisfactory explanations from the teachings of the church to which I belonged, I looked into every ology that came my way, but still found no answer.
The time came when the foundations of all that stands for the human idea of a useful, happy life were tottering; and later, when nearly everything had been swept away, I had to part from a child most dear to me. Beyond the grief of losing her there was anxiety about her health. From babyhood she had suffered from gastric catarrh and was on a very strict diet, any deviation from which caused a high temperature and suffering for days. On leaving me she would be among other children, and I was afraid that through neglect of her health she would become a chronic sufferer.
A student of Christian Science, seeing both the child's need and mine, earnestly asked me to read the Christian Science Sentinel, a copy of which she gave me. I did read it, from cover to cover, and decided to take the child to a practitioner. The practitioner, while explaining the rudiments of divine Mind-healing to me, gave the child a book to look at, but I saw that she listened to every word. On leaving I was told to let her eat the same kind of food that the other children ate. The healing was instantaneous, for she never again suffered in that way, and an internal weakness, not mentioned to the practitioner, also vanished at the same time.
