The Apostle John, whose clear understanding of Jesus' teachings made him the beloved disciple, epitomized his spiritual enlightenment in the profound but simple statement, "God is love." In all his teaching and healing, Christ Jesus constantly refuted the erroneous views of Deity as both good and evil held by those who preceded him, and proved God to be Love.
Jesus' understanding of God as Love necessarily illumined his consciousness to discern God also as Spirit. The all-important fact of spiritual existence he announced in the following words: "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."
As our Way-shower, Jesus gave us numerous examples of the power of divine Love, through spiritual understanding, to solve every problem, even that of death, which, because of the far-flung impact of war, claims to argue so poignantly today. When John told of Jesus' receiving word that his friend Lazarus was sick, he recorded also the fact that "Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus." How comforting to know that the greatest of all Christians expressed the warmth of pure affection which meets the human need! Jesus invariably showed forth the tenderness and compassion of the Christ. He also made it plain that a loving regard for others is an expression of our oneness with God and with each other — the tangible presence of the one and only Mind, Spirit. He entertained the consciousness of illimitable Love that beholds man scientifically as undying and eternally perfect.
