THE EQUIPOLLENCE OF GOD

From the March 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although equipollence is a term used but once in all the published works of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, its significance is so great as to bring healing and protection to all who even faintly grasp its true spiritual import. The definition of this term as found in Webster's dictionary, however, leaves much to be desired as far as the student of Christian Science is concerned. As so often is the case, human terms applied to Deity are more or less limited until the light of Christian Science reveals their more profound and spiritual meaning.

"Equipollence" is derived from aequus, meaning equal, and pollens, to be strong. It signifies equality of power at all points. As used in Christian Science, this spiritual quality belongs exclusively to God, and applies to the omnipotence, omnipresence, and omniscience of Mind. It indicates the allness and everywhereness of Love, revealing all of good as available all the time in every place. It points to the eternality of Life as forever refuting any false sense of God as fading out or becoming even momentarily absent. It presents the infinitude of Spirit as never conscious of its supposititious opposite, matter. It proclaims the infallibility of divine Principle as never for an instant permitting the intrusion of a single error into the vast domain of Truth.

Following a summary of "the three great verities of Spirit" on pages 109 and 110 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy continues in the next paragraph: "Thus it was that I beheld, as never before, the awful unreality called evil. The equipollence of God brought to light another glorious proposition, — man's perfectibility and the establishment of the kingdom of heaven on earth." How discerning the vision of our spiritual Leader! She clearly comprehended that the equipollence of Life, Truth, and Love made the here and now of God's kingdom a scientific reality, establishing man's perfection as an eternal fact. Since there could not exist so much as a tiny atom of space in which the power and intelligence of Mind are not eternally expressed and available, there remain only our recognition and acknowledgment of this infinite truth to enable us to meet and master any condition advanced by mortal mind.
