AN OPPORTUNITY TO FORESTALL EVIL

From the August 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Alertness to reverse and dissipate every false prophecy of mortal mind that suggests future epidemics, pestilence, or affliction is one effective way for Christian Scientists to help protect the health of mankind. Such prophecies, we should see, are but lying prognostications of evil, asserting that devilish material forces have authority over our future. Let us instantly and persistently reverse this with the understanding that God's universally perpetual sovereignty leaves evil neither place nor time in which to evolve, develop, or externalize any condition detrimental to Life, and its family of ideas.

A physician recently stated to the faculty of the Command and General Staff School of the Army at Leavenworth, Kansas—the highest school of military learning in the United States—that a malarial epidemic of major proportions is expected, in this country, by the medical profession, on the return of servicemen affected with this disease from the Mediterranean and South Pacific areas. This fear evolves from the belief that mosquitoes biting those with malaria give it to others, whom they later feed upon, through blood infection.

His motive in painting this gloomy picture of things to come was worthy, for he hoped that his hearers, being forewarned, would perhaps be forearmed. But the best that material methods can do in such cases is no satisfactory antidote, because such methods never reach the root of the trouble. They dwell upon material effects, and never reach the cause, or source, of disease and affliction—the material mind.
