TURNING BACK THE TIDE

From the August 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Uppermost in the thought of every patriot and lover of liberty is the desire to help in turning back the tide of aggression which threatens the world today. There is a simple, effective way in which every individual can lessen the sum total of erroneous beliefs which constitute the tide of evil. Each can guard his own thinking against the insidious suggestion that evil is a reality or power and that it can operate through a person, thing, place, or circumstance. In order to do this he must be able to ascertain whether that which is presented to his thought is true or false according to spiritually intelligent evaluation.

Christian Science enables its students to differentiate between the true and the false by showing them that there is but one Mind, or God, which is wholly good and produces only good. It points out that anything unlike good has no creator, hence no Mind or Principle to support it; it is therefore merely supposition. An alert student soon learns to embrace joyously that which is presented to thought which will bless all concerned, and to dismiss as supposition that which claims to benefit him at the expense of another.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, instantly healed cases of illness and discord because she was able to turn back the tide of supposition and establish the true spiritual facts. When turning back the tide, one refuses to become the believer of a lie. Mrs. Eddy wrote in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook (pp. 542, 543), "The sinful misconception of Life as something less than God, having no truth to support it, falls back upon itself." When one refuses to believe a lie or misconception, one turns it back upon itself by not giving it mental support. Any misconception, such as the belief that there is real life or activity in what are called disease germs, falls back upon itself for substantiation when one refuses to become the victim of this misconception and establishes in consciousness a sense of Life as God.
