"THE FORCES OF GOD"

From the August 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science presents to the one who is sick or harassed with a seemingly insurmountable difficulty a key to freedom, a power that can turn all his troubles into peace and settled joy. Everyone, if he will, can prove its healing truth for himself. The student who discerns its radiant promises of healing strives, with all the energy of which he is capable, to obey the strict demands of Christian Science—to be God's likeness in thought and word and deed; and proportionately to his success in this divine direction he finds himself able to use the forces of God which overcome the insidious beliefs of limitation, ill-luck, disease, superstition, fear, danger, all the myriad phases of evil which abound in the world today.

Regarding the existence of spiritual forces, ever available to mankind, it is interesting to note that in 1928, Charles P. Steinmetz, the world's then foremost electrical engineer, was asked by Professor Babson what line of research would see the greatest development during the next fifty years. His reply was: "I think the greatest discovery will be made along spiritual lines. Here is a force which history clearly teaches has been the greatest power in the development of men and history. Some day people will learn that material things do not bring happiness and are of little use in making men creative and powerful. Then the scientists of the world will turn their laboratories over to the study of God and prayer and the spiritual forces, which as yet have hardly been guessed at. When that day comes the world will see more advancement in one generation than has been seen in the past four" (The Christian Science Monitor, February 2, 1928).

The spiritual law, or force, which Steinmetz predicted as still to be discovered, was made known to the world by Mary Baker Eddy as far back as 1866, and it has been demonstrated in Christian Science healing too many times since then to leave any shadow of doubt as to its undeniable remedial powers. Twenty-two years after her discovery of this law Mrs. Eddy said in an address in Chicago (Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 104, 105): "I will gain a balance on the side of good, my true being. This alone gives me the forces of God wherewith to overcome all error. On this rests the implicit faith engendered by Christian Science, which appeals intelligently to the facts of man's spirituality, individuality, to disdain the fears and destroy the discords of this material personality."
