ARE YOU IN NEED OF COMFORTING?

From the August 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A Lovesome word is "comforter." Whether it appears in English, Hebrew, or Greek in the Holy Scriptures its presence connotes refreshment, strengthening, holding up. "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you," writes the gentle Isaiah. Would the wise mother attempt to bring to a fearing or suffering child practical consolation and abiding peace without the strengthening conviction of the heavenly Father's healing, protecting power?

Since the beginning of the human dream, heavenly homesick mortals have looked away from matter to Spirit for comfort, sustaining, and release. Biblical lore is replete with assurances of God's love for His creation. Inspired writers in all the centuries have declared their conviction that the Lord is humanity's Shepherd, its shield and buckler, its preserver and refuge from the storms of sense. Is it surprising, therefore, to find the great Teacher of Nazareth prolonging this theme in his utterances, and illustrating its scientific practicality in his healing, redemptive work?

He bade all who were weary and heavy-laden to come to the Christ—to the understanding of man's oneness with mist-dispelling Truth and Love, which he exemplified; but finally, realizing the utter inability of the thought of that age to comprehend the true import of his message, he foretold the coming of "another Comforter," which was to abide with men forever—"even the Spirit of truth."
