In the autumn of 1941 I was suddenly taken ill and was rushed to a hospital. After a few days the doctors pronounced my case a very serious bladder condition, for which I should have to undergo an operation. I consented to the operation, and for a short time after it took place I seemed to improve. Then came a sudden change for the worse. The doctor said that although he was doing all he could, I did not seem to be responding to treatment. Not long after that he said he thought it would be best for me to return to my home, because he could do no more, but that I might respond to home care.
On my return home, among the many friends who visited me was a student of Christian Science who had often spoken to me about having Christian Science treatment. I had not been ready to listen to him. but now, as all else had failed, I consented to see a practitioner. When the practitioner arrived, I related what had been my mental attitude toward Christian Science and the verdict of the doctors. I said that the doctors wanted to have a further examination, but she frankly told me that she could not help me until I was willing to trust wholly in God. After giving it some thought I decided to do this, and she then gave me some reading to do in the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
The textbook was difficult for me to understand. Each time the practitioner visited me and asked if I had done the reading that I had been assigned I replied in the affirmative, but added that I could not understand it. She would reply, "Keep reading." Through my obedience and the putting on of the childlike qualities needed, my health began to improve.
