When I was four years old my parents became students of Christian Science, so I have known little else. Thanks to its healing power, which was constantly demonstrated in our home, I have much for which to be grateful.
Christian Science has been of the greatest help to me during four years spent in the Far East, from which I returned in 1942. While stationed with my husband in India and Singapore, and later when evacuated to Ceylon and passing through Cape Town, it was a source of joy and momentary surprise—until one realized that coincidence is a natural manifestation of God's plan, not the result of chance—to find Science at hand wherever went. In India, for instance, Christian Scientists were near neighbors, and met to read the Sunday service; in Singapore I was within easy reach of the Christian Science church. And when in the more lonely surroundings of Ceylon I was unexpectedly put in touch with a devoted student of Science. I am indeed grateful to have seen for myself the world-wide scope of Christian Science. During our time abroad I was entirely free from the fevers and illnesses that are prevalent in the East.
When we lost our little girl and kind friends tried to comfort with the assurance that it was "God's will," I rebelled inwardly. I turned to Science and Health, where our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, asks the reader (p. 206), "Does God send sickness, giving the mother her child for the brief space of a few years and then taking it away by death?" As I realized the true answer—that Love is never less than Love —the sense of loss receded. Later, under Christian Science treatment, the birth of a second little girl was so quick and harmonious that the doctor was unable to reach us until after her arrival.
