So closely allied are the two words "one" and "all" in their metaphysical essence that they can scarcely be considered separately. For instance, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, states in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 267), "The allness of Deity is His oneness."
The common use of the word "one" to indicate "a single unit" broadens into its meaning of "single in kind" as it appears in the Biblical verse (Deut. 6:4), "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord," the one creator, one cause, one parent. Since God is one, man, His reflection, is one, though multiform in individual expression. Even a glimpse of this great fact begins to break down the false estimates of ourselves and others, as well as the barriers these wrong concepts build up between men, endowing them with conflicting natures, temperaments, abilities, constitutions, and backgrounds.
When the understanding of the oneness of man with God, and of man with man becomes universal, hate, rivalry, superiority, and inferiority will disappear, and in their place will be gratitude to the Giver of all good for every opportunity for growth and progress afforded to others as well as to ourselves. Without reservation we shall be willing to acknowledge that our brother man has by reflection all the good that belongs to the children of God. Thus will the true brotherhood of man be glimpsed, and the joy of journeying on together toward the goal of mutual freedom and well-being be experienced.
