SOLE ALLEGIANCE TO GOD

From the October 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Sole allegiance to God brings wonderful foresight and enduring strength, thus enabling one to turn seeming disaster into a glorious victory for good. In "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 276, 277) Mary Baker Eddy writes: "In the dark hours, wise Christian Scientists stand firmer than ever in their allegiance to God. Wisdom is wedded to their love, and their hearts are not troubled."

Do burdens seem heavy, and are you sometimes tempted to believe that God has forsaken you? That He could forsake us is an impossibility. God is ever conscious of His children, His divine ideas. No more can the all-knowing, all-loving God forsake His precious creation than the sun can cease to impart its light. Let us be instant in obeying the Christly call to work, pray, and trust. Retrogression or waning zeal is evidence of disobedience to God. His command to us is to go forward. Lethargy would bid us pause and rest or become discouraged, but let us remember that spiritual progress demands ceaseless vigilance. Every effort to overcome evil brings greater spiritual growth, a wider vision of the true universe, the reflection of God's grandeur and perfection.

Many have become so grounded in the teachings of Christian Science that false pictures of sickness, conflict, sorrow, or misery incite them only to greater reliance on God. If arguments of inharmony and frustration would obstruct their vision of the Christ-idea, they strive to keep their thoughts in subjection to divine Mind by utilizing the truths found in the Bible and in the writings of their Leader, Mrs. Eddy. Regardless of how mesmeric and terrifying the claims of mortal mind may seem to be, these Scientists know the efficacy and availability of divine law, and so firmly take their stand with God. Thus they gain calmness, joy, assurance, and peace, priceless possessions of stable realities.
