PROFESSION OR MINISTRY?

From the October 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To choose a profession or vocation is a worthy aim for youth. What forward-looking young person does not speculate as to his lifework? One hears much these days about career men and women; and how fortunate is the person who feels so definitely his fitness for a particular service that he resolves to make this his career!

A young singer who showed much promise both vocally and histrionically was urged by friends and musical instructors to train himself for the concert and operatic stage. While weighing the matter with much earnestness, he became interested in Christian Science. Before long he experienced a definite proof of Christian healing and his joy knew no bounds. Never with his music had he known such genuine satisfaction; never had any activity seemed so worth while as this. In this state of thought, he sought out a Christian Science practitioner. He told her of his predicament—that he seemed to have an aptitude for singing, but now he was confronted with a new line of endeavor, one which would cause him to abandon a musical career. Was this right? What was the answer?

The practitioner wisely refrained from giving him any advice, and turned him to the divine Mind for guidance. "But," she said in conclusion, "speaking of careers, do you know of a grander career than the Christian ministry of healing the sick and reforming the sinner—of bringing heaven, harmony, to the sons of men?" That settled the career question for this young man. While he was not immediately able to embark upon the sacred work of a Christian Science practitioner, it became his goal, his objective, and in due course he was able to devote all his time to this ministry.
