"Experience is victor, never the vanquished; and out of defeat comes the secret of victory" (Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy, p. 339). So many proofs of divine Love's protection and guidance have been mine that I desire to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to God for Christian Science. I hope that my experiences will help someone else.
During the first year of my study I tried very hard to guide and protect my four children in the way I had been taught in Christian Science. As I grew in understanding my concept of love improved, and I knew that divine Love did not include finite personal responsibility. I could see that I was urging and pushing instead of being wise, understanding, and gentle. I found I must loose the children mentally and let them go, and never forget that they are always in the care of divine Mind. I have had my reward, for they are married and their families are all learning to rely on Christian Science.
My youngest child became very cold while sliding on a day when the temperature was around zero. She tried to get into the house but was too tired to turn the door knob, and lay down on the porch to rest. I was led to go to the door, where I found her. Recognizing the symptoms of this difficulty, I brought the child in and tried to rouse her and remove her clothing, but I could get no response. I did not think of asking for help; I was too engrossed in talking with God. I began fairly dragging her around the room, telling her that God was her Life, that God was awake and active, and that, because she reflected Him, she was too. Soon I felt her feet start to take hold and she began to walk a few steps. On awakening, she first coaxed me to let her sleep, but I realized that I needed to know more vigorously that God was her Life. Soon she was normal. She went to bed at the usual time and awakened in the morning happy and free, with no bad results.
