Nay, Zacchaeus, you little guessed,
When you beheld the Lord,
How knowing him could bless mankind.
What peace his law afford.
He taught, while here he walked with men,
The Word's eternal power—
The Word of Him who made all things
In that great primal hour.
He taught with patient ministry
By parable and deed
The lesson of immortal Life
That knows no earth-born creed.
The gentle Master passed that way,
And throngs pressed close to hear
The gospel of the Comforter:
Our God, forever near.
But, oh. the Christ no man beheld
With eyes as mortals see!
And yet its living presence heals
Today and strengthens me.
