In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, makes the following arresting statement (pp. 218, 219): "When we wake to the truth of being, all disease, pain, weakness, weariness, sorrow, sin, death, will be unknown, and the mortal dream will forever cease."
Next to the Bible, Science and Health has done more than any other book to reveal to mankind "the truth of being;" and no other book has ever defined the whole of human experience as "the mortal dream," a fiction. Mrs. Eddy's statement is a challenge to the theological, medical, and scientific thought of the ages.
In 1866 Mrs. Eddy was instantly healed through spiritual power of the effects of a severe accident. In her book "Miscellaneous Writings," referring to her discovery of Christian Science, she says (p. 24):"This knowledge came to me in an hour of great need; and I give it to you as death-bed testimony to the daystar that dawned on the night of material sense. This knowledge is practical, for it wrought my immediate recovery from an injury caused by an accident, and pronounced fatal by the physicians. On the third day thereafter, I called for my Bible, and opened it at Matthew ix. 2. As I read, the healing Truth dawned upon my sense; and the result was that I rose, dressed myself, and ever after was in better health than I had before enjoyed."
