LEAVING THE OLD FOR THE NEW

From the January 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Thousands who were sick, sinning, and dying have found in Christian Science the Christ, Truth, which has brought them healing and regeneration. In the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (p. 171), "Through discernment of the spiritual opposite of materiality, even the way through Christ, Truth, man will reopen with the key of divine Science the gates of Paradise which human beliefs have closed, and will find himself unfallen, upright, pure, and free, not needing to consult almanacs for the probabilities either of his life or of the weather, not needing to study brainology to learn how much of a man he is."'

Through the understanding which comes from daily study of the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly, students have found the solution for every problem which presents itself in human experience. The "key of divine Science" has brought to light the spiritual meaning of the Scriptures, lifting the veil of ignorance from human consciousness and thereby revealing the spirituality of the universe and man. The true selfhood of each one of us is never in need of healing, but is already whole and harmonious, the forever reflection of its Maker, diseaseless, fearless, unfettered.

The truth of man's present sinless, unchanging perfection held steadfastly in thought, and this in spite of the testimony of the physical senses to the contrary, brought healing to a student of Christian Science and her son several years ago. The student received a message that her son, who was living away from home at the time, had fallen into difficulties and was ill as a result. Almost overcome by disappointment and shame, she heard the voice of a loved one saying, "The boy's true selfhood is no less God's image and likeness today than it was yesterday." This statement was all that was needed to break the mesmerism. As she realized man's at-one-ment with God, and knew that he can never be separated from God's loving care and embrace; that because he is God's reflection there is nothing in him to respond to evil, the calm assurance of well-being took possession of her consciousness, bringing peace. A quick solution of the problem followed.
