THE HOLY GHOST

From the January 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The New Testament opens with the account of Jesus' birth, including the statement that Mary "was found with child of the Holy Ghost" (Matt. 1:18). When Jesus was baptized of John, Luke records that the Holy Ghost descended upon him, audibly verifying the fact that he was the Son of God.

What is the Holy Ghost which set aside material laws in the birth of Jesus, which descended upon him at the beginning of his ministry, sustained him throughout his earthly mission of healing, and was evident in the works of the disciples and the success of the early Christian church? The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, on page 588 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," defines "Holy Ghost" as follows: "Divine Science; the development of eternal Life, Truth, and Love." Modern translators as a rule use the term Holy Spirit for Holy Ghost.

Jesus being divinely endowed with the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit, naturally possessed the spiritual ability to heal. The relation of the Holy Ghost to spiritual healing and teaching is made clear in the New Testament. On that last day with their Master, just before his ascension, Jesus assured his disciples: "Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.... Ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth" (Acts 1:5, 8).
