"BEAUTIFUL UPON THE MOUNTAINS"

From the January 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!" These words from Isaiah (52:7), which have been loved for centuries by students of differing creeds, are especially significant today, when steps towards maintaining peace are being taken throughout the world.

To Christian Scientists, the phrase "upon the mountains" is particularly significant, for if these words were omitted from the passage some of its spiritual meaning would be lost. Webster defines "tidings" as "intelligence" or "news." Hence we can say that when our "intelligence" comes from the mountains, from the heights of spiritual inspiration, then it is good. Moffatt translates the passage: ' "Look! 'tis the feet of a herald, hastening over the hills, with glad, good news, with tidings of relief, calling aloud to Sion, 'Your God reigns!'"

Every Christian Scientist desires to be a bearer of this good news, and prays for consecration and enlightenment which will enable him to relieve the human misery that to material sense presents itself on all sides as the result of war. Turning to the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, each finds that humility is the first requisite for gaining the spiritual understanding that is necessary to the carrying on of relief work of this kind.
