JUDGING RIGHTLY

From the October 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Errors like straws upon the surface flow; He who would search for pearls, must dive below.

Thus Dryden points out that in order to avoid the shallows of superficial judgment one must go below the surface to find true values. Christian Science teaches that, despite the false material creation which the physical senses present, God's eternal creation exists now and forever in its absolute perfection. It instructs its students not to ignore evil's claims, but to detect them, and to replace the false concept of creation with the true or spiritual idea of God and man.

Our great Master declared (Luke 18:19), "None is good, save one, that is, God." As we hold to the true concept of man in God's image, we shall see that neither good nor evil can be personally possessed. All good belongs to God, whom man reflects; as for evil, it has no origin or creator. It is a mistake to accord error any personality through which to deceive mankind. When we gain a glimpse of the spiritual man, we begin to perceive that true identity includes only love and good will toward all mankind. Knowing this spiritual fact, we can entertain no sense of criticism or condemnation of our brother or of ourselves, but rather shall we condemn evil and realize its impotence and unreality.
