WINNING THE WAY

From the February 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It has been truly said that the Bible is the chart of life. A chart is useful only as it accurately shows the way to a desired destination. The purchase of the Bible by mankind in greater numbers than any other book gives evidence that its potential value as a guide is recognized by many. Any chart must be read with understanding if the desired haven is to be reached, and the Bible offers no exception to this general rule.

God's first command as recorded in the Scriptures is, "Let there be light." The closing verse of the same chapter (Gen. 1:31) reads, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." Christian Science has come, in turn, to elucidate, and enable mankind to prove, the fact that since God and His creation are wholly good, the opposite of good, or evil, cannot have either place or power in creation.

Our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, rightly valued the chart of life, for she spent three years in study of the Bible before giving to the world the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Of her experience as a pathfinder she writes as follows (ibid., p. 109): "I knew the Principle of all harmonious Mind-action to be God, and that cures were produced in primitive Christian healing by holy, uplifting faith; but I must know the Science of this healing, and I won my way to absolute conclusions through divine revelation, reason, and demonstration." "Divine revelation, reason, and demonstration" will likewise win the way to "absolute conclusions" for the present-day worker.
