THE SCIENCE OF LIFE

From the February 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In this age of startling discoveries and inventions, men are becoming more readily receptive of revolutionary scientific truths. Radio, aviation, and other developments of a freer, broader concept of existence are paving the way to a more universal acceptance of the greatest of all discoveries, the Science of Life. Those not yet aware of the present availability of this Science are nevertheless preparing to receive it. because the very momentum of modern invention is moving them into a state of nonsurprise. "Nothing is impossible these days," people are admitting. When men open their thought to this extent, no wonder that ever-increasing numbers are accepting and greatly benefiting from the absolute Science of being— Christian Science.

No matter what preconceptions men may have had as to how flying would be achieved, when the science of aviation brought success they accepted it. Some may have been disappointed that their own pet theories—such as, for instance, some sort of birdlike wing flapping—found no place therein, but they did not whine over these omissions; rather did they accept and use the new discoveries that made flying so much simpler than they had supposed possible. And so with the Science of Life. Investigators who would benefit thereby must abandon their preconceptions and their misconceptions and accept Christian Science just as it has been discovered, and proved by practice, in all its profound simplicity.

Biology, dealing with so-called organic life, or matter, has never given a satisfactory explanation of existence or offered a solution to the problem of disease and death. Physiology, anatomy, and the multiple branches of medical study have failed to provide a lasting victory over disease. Human psychology and philosophy have utterly failed to present the Science of Mind, with its obvious relation to health and morals. True Science reveals that Life is not organic, but spiritual; that immortal Mind is the only substance, and that, therefore, matter is a mere supposition of mortal life and substance outside the allness of the one Mind, Life, or Spirit. Goodness and health are the atmosphere of pure Mind, which expresses its holiness and wholeness in spiritual man, its manifestation. The wholehearted recognition of these facts heals both disease and sin, and defeats death.
