GRATITUDE

From the February 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When gratitude with its transforming grace
Is given entrance into thought, no night
So dark, no gloom so dense, but that
Its radiance can say, "Let there be light."

Its presence soon dispels discouragement;
Sweet peace it brings where discord seemed to reign,
And swings ajar the door to harmony
As with it strength and courage come again.

So quietly it sheds its healing balm,
So simple is its mien, we oft forget
How powerful its rays to pierce the clouds
Of earthborn sorrow, lack, pain, or regret.

For gratitude to God uplifts the heart.
To saddened thoughts it brings sunshine at length,
And those expressing it in daily life
Find gratitude becomes a tower of strength.
