PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST

From the November 1947 issue of The Christian Science Journal

During the late war a notable revial of interest in practicing Christianity was observable. Indulgence of the material senses failed lamentably to satisfy or to confer true peace or happiness. This failure, acutely felt during the years of stress and turmoil, drove men and women who had not prayed in years back to prayer to find the source and center of their true being, God.

Now that hostilities are over, true peace is yet to be won. It is, therefore, vitally important that this new interest in spiritual things should not be allowed to lapse, for it will aid the establishment of peace on the permanent foundation of spiritual verities. In this work the Christian Science church has a great part to play, for it leads world thought in its emphasis upon right thinking—thinking based on the allness of God and His perfect spiritual creation.

Church work and regular church attendance help one to learn more about the truths of being as revealed in Christian Science and present opportunities for putting them into practice, bringing rich rewards. But mortal mind may put forth many excuses for not attending church and participating in church work, a particularly prevalent one being that more benefit is derived from wholesome outdoor recreation, such as athletics or a walk, a drive, or a day in the country. Admittedly a beautiful or peaceful scene may inspire and uplift thought, but it can never bring the spiritual understanding of God and His perfect spiritual creation that comes from drinking in the scientific statements and practical explanations of Truth read from the desk at our church services and from participating in the healing work of the church. Giving first place to material pleasure and secondary consideration to divine worship is in fact breaking the First Commandment, "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
