OVERCOMING THROUGH SPIRITUAL STRENGTH

From the November 1947 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Revelation (21:7) John writes, "He that overcometh shall inherit all things." Christian Science is teaching mankind how to overcome everything unlike God and how to lay hold of all good, the things of Spirit. It has revealed that what we must overcome in order to inherit all good is not an entity, not something real and formidable, but a negative state of thought, an ignorance of God and His laws, which are ever available to meet human needs.

Through their study and application of this Science many are awakening from the darkening belief in a power which can work ill to the realization that God, good, is the only power, the one cause. This realization, held to, dispels mortal ignorance of divine law and power and uncovers as unreal the false beliefs of mortal mind which ultimate in sin, sickness, and death. As one continues in this study, he finds that the aggressive, self-assertive, and pretentious nature of evil is also exposed. Christian Science rouses the student to see that effective resistance to the fraudulent claims of the one evil cannot be apathetic or passive, but must be vigorous and active. To overcome error, one needs positively and constantly to refute its seeming reality by utilizing the spiritual truth in his human affairs.

The great need of mankind is for more spiritual enlightenment, by which truth closes the door to ignorant beliefs, the only avenue through which evil seems to reach us. It is therefore of first importance that we set up a guard in our thought against the ignorance, fear, or sin which would invade it. The wise worker in Christian Science does not ignore evil's claim to intelligence and power, but refutes it with the truth of the all-intelligence and all-power of divine Mind. He does not sink into idle dreaminess, but through unceasing spiritual watchfulness detects and thwarts evil's claim that it can use his consciousness for any purpose, good or bad.
