Testimonies of Healing

Because I have received so much joy...

From the March 1947 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Because I have received so much joy, peace, and happiness since I have become interested in Christian Science, I feel that the least I can do is to express my gratitude to God for two healings I have had.

The first healing was one of drinking. I was a slave to alcohol so completely that some of the best doctors said there was no cure for me at all. I had been in several sanitariums to be cured of this terrible habit, but none of them helped me except for a short time, after which I would be as bad as ever. In 1938 I met a woman who was a Christian Scientist. We became good friends, and she asked me to attend church with her. I accepted her invitation, and after the Sunday morning service she asked me what I thought of it. I told her that it was wonderful and I would be glad to go again. Our friendship deepened, and within a year we were married. I started drinking heavily again, however, and my wife asked help for me from a practitioner, who went to work at once and stood by me day and night for some time.

Finally I became so ill that I could not drink. My wife was employed at the time, and I told her before she left one morning that I did not think I should live through the day. I had been told by physicians prior to this time that I could not live through another attack. I was very fearful, and late that afternoon I lost consciousness. The people living in the apartment below heard me fall, ran upstairs, found me, and called an ambulance. They also called my wife and she asked them not to do a thing until she got home. She began at once to know the truth about man. the image of God. as we are taught in Christian Science. Upon arriving home she dismissed everyone, and started to prepare dinner as usual. Her work was so effective that although I had not eaten for about eight days, I was able to eat a normal meal that evening. That was in December of 1939, and it makes me very happy to say that I have never desired alcohol in any form since then.
