NO NEED TO COVET

From the March 1947 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Why should we long for what another person has? The reasonable answer is that we think we lack the needful things of life or believe that something is missing that would make our joy complete. Christian Science teaches that all that we need —health, wealth, beauty, companionship —is always available through the realization that man as the reflection of God, coexistent with the Mind that is the source of all true supply, has all he needs every moment.

Jesus never sought material wealth but had what was needed to satisfy the demands of the day. He said (Matt. 6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Everything we need is made humanly manifest through a right understanding of God and man. Seeking God, good, we do not find lack, envy, jealousy, and covetousness. Such errors originate not in the divine Mind, but are beliefs of mortal mind which must be reversed. Rather do we find in seeking God the abundance, love, and happiness which are man's divine inheritance.

The following incident shows how a student of Christian Science met the desire for human love and companionship by reversing the suggestions of mortal mind. For several months this student had eagerly anticipated her brothers return home from overseas in time for Christmas. Then, to her surprise, she learned that he was not returning home, but had arranged to spend the holiday in another state.
