"YOUR DAILY WALK AND CONVERSATION"

From the April 1947 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The passing from human sight of so holy a man as Christ Jesus no doubt offered opportunity for friend and foe to indulge in damaging speculation concerning the import of his life and work. The twenty-fourth chapter of Luke's Gospel contains the record of two men who at the time of Jesus' resurrection were walking towards Emmaus. It seems that their conversation and reasoning in regard to the recent events manifested confusion and despair.

Jesus, who in their unbelief appeared to them as a "stranger," joined them. Discerning their need, he proceeded to direct their thoughts to the living reality of the Christ, Truth. This he did by opening their consciousness to the absolute reliance that should be placed on the truth about God and His Son, as recorded in the Bible. It is significant that, on their return to Jerusalem to proclaim to the disciples their joyous news of the meeting with the risen Lord, prominent in their thoughts was the memory of Jesus' conduct and behavior, for "they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread."

Christ Jesus knew that because the Christ, his real selfhood, was ever at one with his Father it was impossible for him to express aught that did not have its origin in divine Love. The Master's bearing and conversation on that Emmaus road set a standard to which many aspire but which comparatively few ever attain. The gentleness, love, compassion, and spiritual understanding underlying his words and action were indeed expressive of his constant holy communion with his heavenly Father.
