Today, after twenty years of study, use, and practical proofs of the healing power of Christian Science, this testimony is long overdue. I turned to Science at a time when all earthly joy, peace, and happiness seemed gone forever. I could find no comfort in the orthodox church in which I had grown up, and whose teachings I had faithfully followed. Try as I would I could not find peace. But the words of David in the fortieth Psalm clearly describe the healing that came to me (verses 2 and 3): "He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord."
In these past years I have had healings of many kinds: of lost happiness over personal plans, of human relationships in family, home, business, and church work, of traits of character and disposition, including jealousy, resentment, and a sharp and willful tongue.
I have had many physical healings, including those of chronic constipation of years' standing, which was healed without any specific work being done for it, influenza during a widespread epidemic, colds, and an abscess on the eyelid. Early in my study of Christian Science, when I was staying in a hotel in a southern city, I awakened one night in great pain, so intense I could do nothing for myself. After some time I managed to reach the telephone and call a local Christian Science practitioner. I told her of my suffering, and her calm reply was, "You will be all right." I threw myself on the bed, and the next thing I knew it was morning. I believe that the medical diagnosis of the trouble would have been gallstones. I was filled with gratitude for the healing of pain, but was much more grateful that I had turned instinctively to Christian Science for help and had not for an instant thought of calling for the nurse or hotel physician. To this day, I am profoundly grateful for this healing.
