A More Acceptable Gift

From the May 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Let me give a gift, Lord,
And let it be acceptable.

In what rage of jealousy
Did Cain slay Abel?
Why should Abel's lambs please God?
Why should Cain's fruits be ignored?

God in mercy told him why:
"Sin lieth at the door, Cain."
God in mercy counseled him
To conquer it.

Let me give a gift, Lord.
If sin be lying at the door,
Make me patient, make me meek,
To rule out its presumption.

Blind and deaf to God's dear love,
In what rage of jealousy
Did Cain slay Abel.

The more acceptable gift may be
To know God needs not a gift from me,
But I myself need clearly see
The universe and man free,
Brother at peace with brother.
