Testimonies of Healing

Upon reading the testimonies in our...

From the May 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Upon reading the testimonies in our periodicals, I often exclaim, "Thank God for this healing and its proof of what Christian Science has brought to the world!" My own life is full of serenity and contentment as the result of this study. It is with the hope that my experiences which follow may help someone else that I recount them with joy. My first healing was related in a former testimony, and now I can add that during the past forty years there has been no return of the trouble which almost crushed my hopes. Several doctors had diagnosed the case as tumor and thought an operation necessary. A friend led me to Christian Science, and I was free.

More recently I was on a train returning to Oklahoma from Boston. At noon I ate some lunch which I had taken with me, and in half an hour I became extremely ill. The next few hours I clung to a passage in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 463) which reads, "A spiritual idea has not a single element of error, and this truth removes properly whatever is offensive." I also tried to repeat "the scientific statement of being" (ibid., p. 468) but found I could not recall the words, although I was familiar with them. This alarmed me. Fear said, What if you are becoming unconscious while you are here quite alone? The voice of Truth came to my rescue, saying clearly, What if you don't say the words, you do know the meaning: God is All and matter is nothing! I then asked myself, Are you making a reality of matter, believing that there is something called food or ptomaine poisoning and that it can destroy life in a material body? I reversed such false reasoning by declaring what our Leader says (ibid., p. 207): "There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause." How could there be such a thing as poison in God's perfect universe? He made all, and He made it good! The fear of being alone was dispelled by declaring God's omnipresence and omnipotence. I soon felt complete relief and went into the diner and ate a light meal. Retiring later, I slept well. When I arose in the morning, it was with a song of gratitude in my heart, for I was feeling strong and happy.

Many other instances of the power of Truth over error have come to me. On one occasion, a car door was accidentally slammed on my hand. I quickly reversed the arguments of error, entered the church, and filled my post as Reader, without anyone noticing the least nervousness. In fact, there was none, nor any pain. Corns were overcome by my declaring for greater consecration and holding to a desire to keep my feet in the path of righteousness and "the way of holiness," instead of working to get rid of physical discomfort.
