"THE CEMENT OF A HIGHER HUMANITY"

From the October 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ARE we viewing the complex, troubled world picture with a longing to do something about it, and are we haunted by the suggestion, "What can a lone individual do?" Christian Science teaches that universal salvation begins with the individual. It rouses human consciousness and reveals to the receptive and willing thought the unlimited possibilities of man's individuality as the expression of God.

Jesus was an individual; but he was not alone. He proved by countless healings and by his own resurrection and ascension that man, the image and likeness of God, is never a lone and helpless mortal, subject to sin, disease, injustice, persecution, poverty, and death; never the unhappy victim of circumstance. He taught and demonstrated the power of spiritual unity, of man's oneness with God as His idea. He revealed the forever-established fact that man, the son of God, is an immortal idea, reflecting uninterruptedly spiritual dominion and power; an individual expression of the unified, active goodness of the all-embracing Mind. Conscious always of this fact, Jesus acted with authority and power. Before his understanding of the allness and everywhereness of God's goodness and omnipotence, every phase of evil that confronted him faded into oblivion. These proofs of a demonstrable understanding of the dominion of divine sonship Jesus left as his rich legacy to every man, woman, and child.

This glorious legacy of Christ-power and healing, however, was hidden for centuries until discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, who, after her own remarkable healing, unselfishly devoted her entire life to the task of making this blessed truth available to all mankind. Through her discovery all may now gain a spiritual understanding of man's unity with God and experience healing. As his thought is illumined by the light of Christ's revelation, each one becomes a witness to Truth and glimpses the allness and harmony of God's being as an already-established fact.
