THE MOTHER CHURCH: BULWARK OF FREEDOM

From the April 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

EVERY Christian Scientist is a law unto himself. This is not to say that anyone is license unto himself. It is not to give the slightest support to the notion that any person is ever free to do wrong. But it is to emphasize that every individual is free to recognize for himself his normal state of accord with the law of God and that he who adheres to Christian Science, as discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy, will have immeasurable assistance in understanding that law and adequate protection in conforming to it.

Mrs. Eddy had a clear sense of the beauty and power of conformity to law and of the freedom such conformity confers on him who practices it. She also perceived that this conformity must be voluntary, must progressively proceed from the desires and affections of the heart. And she knew that such voluntary conformity is spurred as one recognizes that it enables him to feel the power of God operating in his behalf and to see the evidence of it practically in his life.

Consequently, Mrs. Eddy neglected no opportunity to make clear that real law is God's law, and that laws regulating human affairs, whether called civil, political, or otherwise, are sound in the degree that they reflect or represent God's law. She further emphasized that the way to improve civil and political laws is to understand their purpose in terms of the beneficence they derive from the divine, and to obey them even while directing effort toward bringing them more and more closely into line with the original law of God.
