In an old account book kept by my father an entry of April 26, 1889, shows the purchase of a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Some items of doctors' bills and medicine were noted before that date, but none afterwards. Today completes the span of sixty-one years of complete reliance upon Christian Science for healing. My mother was healed at that time, and ever after, her greatest desire was to promote the Cause of Christian Science. In the Journal of April, 1893 (pp. 31, 32), over the initials A. P. S. at Bradshaw, is her testimony of protection in a cyclone that wrecked much of the town in 1890. Another account of this experience was published in her testimony which appeared in the Christian Science Sentinel of February 26, 1921.
I have but one dim recollection of a doctor's aid in our family, an examination of my sister made more than sixty years ago. When in high school, I had an attack of what was probably appendicitis. When my parents' work did not bring about a healing, a practitioner was called by long-distance telephone, and I was soon able to return to school. The trouble has never recurred. When a case of ivy poisoning was not overcome by my own effort and was growing worse, I felt that I should call for the help of a practitioner that evening, but was unwilling to do so. During the night the condition became so serious that there could no longer be any delay. The call to the practitioner was followed by immediate relief and rapid healing.
At one time, when I had worked to free myself from pain in breathing which had continued most of the night, I called a distant practitioner. She said, "God loves you." After a brief conversation with her I left the telephone and found that I had been immediately freed from the trouble.
