For two years one of my sisters was crippled in one leg, clue to a diseased condition of the knee joint, with the result that this leg was about two inches shorter than the other. After a consultation, physicians declared that she would never walk normally and would find it necessary to wear a steel brace continuously and also to use crutches. At this time my family had just moved into a new community. A neighbor, who is a Christian Scientist, heard of my sister's plight and immediately and lovingly introduced this Science to us.
The following Sunday evening Mother took my sister to a Christian Science church service in a nearby town and was so inspired that she asked the Reader, who was a practitioner, for help for my sister. His explanation of God's goodness and love for His children completely changed our whole family's way of thinking. We learned to expect only good from our Father-Mother God and not look for fear-filled days of sickness and lack. Mother was so sure that God would heal my sister that her first tendency was to force the demonstration, and she asked the practitioner if she should take away the crutches from my sister. He very gently and lovingly said to her, "When she no longer needs them, she won't use them." In a few weeks my sister was completely healed and laid aside her crutches. Her leg grew normally and became the same length as the other. She entered into all the activities of childhood and has led an active life ever since.
My first healing took place at about the same time. I had for some time suffered from recurring attacks of malaria. Christian Science treatment was given, and this condition completely disappeared and has never returned. Some years later another sister was healed of muscular rheumatism and at another time of the effects of a serious automobile accident.
