Christian Science is definitely awakening Christendom to the great fact that God in His infinite goodness neither creates, permits, nor sanctions evil. It is becoming more and more generally recognized that any attempt to justify the existence of evil—sin, discord, disease, and death —is to dishonor Him and to impugn His wisdom, goodness, justice, and mercy. To believe that God is responsible for discord and sin is of itself a sin. If such a theory were true, then acquaintance with Him would eventuate in a knowledge of evil, make the destruction of evil impossible, and preclude the possibility of attaining and knowing good.
The Scriptures, however, contain this heartening challenge: "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee" (Job 22:21). Become acquainted with God and have the assurance of peace; know God and thou shalt know good. The reality and permanence of good are as certain as are the reality and permanence of God. Good is not a personal gift, which is bestowed according to mood by an uncertain and notional deity; but good is a forever fact, never for a moment absent, because it is coexistent with an unchanging and gracious God. One cannot know God without knowing good; nor can one know good without knowing God.
Christian Science reveals the true nature and character of God and shows that a right understanding of Him will bring into human experience the sure blessings of His peace and harmony, because this true concept inspires the conscious awareness of good as the reality of being. Evil is but an illusion of false material sense, a fact which is proved as the false sense is replaced with the true, and the material testimony of evil and discord yields to the evidence of God's unerring and omnipotent law of ever-present good. In the light and revelation of pure Spirit it is found that there can be no interruption in the timeless cycles of unending good, where the divine order is maintained in ageless, continuous, and harmonious unfoldment. In this order decline, deterioration, and decay are unknown; in the realm of infinite Mind, or God, there is no cessation of the marvelous activity of creative good.
