"THIS IS A CHURCH"

From the February 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The writer paused before a long one story frame building in the course of erection. He had been told by a member of the local Church of Christ, Scientist, that it had outgrown its present quarters and a new building was being erected. Walking up a narrow plank, he entered the building and called out to a group of carpenters: "Good morning! What's this you are building?"

One of the men straightened up and said, "This is a church," then went on with his work. Receiving permission, the writer walked about inspecting what was soon to be a Christian Science church. The words, "This is a church," had thrilled him and started a train of thought.

"Now just what is a church?" he asked himself. And the following thoughts unfolded to him as his answer. Nearly two thousand years ago Christ Jesus made a mighty declaration (Matt. 16:18): "And I say also unto thee. That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." This declaration followed Peter's statement to Jesus, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." "This church, which came into being through the Master's understanding and demonstration of Christ, Truth, is inseparable from the divine Principle, Love, and is supported by divine law. For three centuries this church exerted an extraordinary influence on the followers of the Master. In the Acts of the Apostles we read of the influx of the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost (chapter 2) and of other marvelous events.
