When I was two years old, I was given up by the physicians and seemed to be passing on. My mother was newly interested in Christian Science, and my father, though opposed, was willing in this extremity to have Science help for me. Needless to say, through the Christian Science treatment given I was soon healed.
In my growing-up experience there were many healings, but they always seemed to be the result of another's good thinking. Then there came a real testing time, when all human props seemed to be gone. My father and mother passed on, and I was filled with fear. A nervous breakdown resulted, and it seemed as though there was not a single organ in my body that functioned normally. Through the consecrated study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy I learned to love and trust God more, and I obtained a clearer realization of the motherhood and fatherhood of God. Mrs. Eddy's statement in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 308, 309), "I earnestly advise all Christian Scientists to remove from their observation or study the personal sense of any one, and not to dwell in thought upon their own or others' corporeality, either as good or evil," was very helpful. This healing took many months, as there was much error to clear out of my thinking; but it finally came, and in the words of one of our hymns I can joyfully say (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 64), "My heart is singing: I have found the way."
I was asked to serve for a month as a substitute soloist in a large church in Chicago. I wanted to refuse, as I felt far from being physically ready to do that type of work. However, the practitioner urged me to accept and assured me that I would be upheld. I was upheld, and from that time on there was continual unfoldment of good.
