Testimonies of Healing

One day when I was battling with what...

From the August 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day when I was battling with what seemed like a Goliath, a kind friend handed me an invitation to a Christian Science lecture. I attended the lecture and a little later borrowed a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which I read through twice. However, I did not take up the study of Christian Science, at that time. I was in continuous pain and did not feel I could lay aside my various bottles of drugs. And so I continued on with the doctors and chiropractor until they told me they could do nothing more. My misery had become unbearable, so in my distress I sought a Christian Science practitioner. It was some time before I noticed any improvement.; in fact, I wanted to go back to the chiropractor. The practitioner recommended that before I made my decision I ask God what He would have me do. This I did, and the words from John (20:27), "Be not faithless, but believing," came to me over and over again; then I awakened to the fact that this was in answer to my prayer. I decided to continue in Christian Science, and I never again doubted the omnipotence of God. From then on I made steady progress.

I had many lessons to learn, and I think the greatest one was that of humility; also I had to learn to love my neighbor as myself. And I am grateful that Christian Science has taught me who my neighbor is..

Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 316). "Christ presents the indestructible man, whom Spirit creates, constitute, and governs." always helped me along the way, The word "constitutes" stood out to me. I knew that I was in reality constituted b Spirit and that as the reflection of God I was constituted of the things of God, hence of perfection and strength. I knew, too, as Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 74), "In Christian Science there is never a retrograde step, never a return to positions outgrown." Soon I began to lose my fear and rejoiced. The healing was slow, but during this time main erroneous conditions of lesser importance were healed. I have also been healed of grief at the passing on of my husband.
