"STRONG POSITION"

From the April 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared" (Ex. 23:20). "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. ... I go to prepare a place for you" (John 14:1,2). Armed with these assurances, one from the Old Testament and one from the New, together with the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, anyone seeking employment can go forth with confidence to find his right place and remunerative employment. Why? Because he will learn through study of Christian Science that the angel referred to in the first quotation is a spiritual intuition direct from God, whose guidance is unerring and ever available; and because the "I" in the second reference is the ever-present Christ, of which Paul said (Eph. 2:18), "Through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father."

How shall we avail ourselves of this guidance and find our proper niche? The answer to this question came to a student of Christian Science while sitting on the beach one day pondering the problem of unemployment, place, position. A boy with a stick in his hand and an eagerly expectant dog barking at his heels came down to the water's edge. The boy threw the stick out into the lake, and the dog bounded in after it. He was a huge animal and stirred the water to such an extent that although he quickly reached his objective, he could not see it. First he had to be quiet and allow the water to calm down. Then he saw the prize, seized it, and carried it to his master.

This performance had been repeated several times when it occurred to the student, "There's the answer!" To receive guidance and find that which we seek, we must first of all be still, silence the clamorous whys and wherefores, the anxieties, doubts, fears, and vain speculations, and listen for guidance and direction. That is why the Psalmist sang (Ps. 46:10), "Be still, and know that I am God."
